Alina Habba has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a judicial decision that invalidated her legal standing to serve.
Acceptance of Resignation
US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, confirmed Habba's resignation on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for Habba to effectively run her office.
"But do not mistake compliance for surrender," she wrote. "This battle will now extend throughout the nation."
Judicial Challenge
The departure follows closely on a judicial panel ruled that she had been unlawfully serving as the top prosecutor. This ruling is likely to affect scores of legal proceedings in New Jersey.
The judicial panel declared that a acting appointment that bypassed Senate approval ran afoul of the federal law governing appointments.

Bondi said that she will remain at the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. She will pursue additional appeals of the disqualification, aiming for a reversal.
In a statement, she argued that the court "should not be able to second-guess the appointment of prosecutors entrusted with executing the primary duty of the administration of criminal prosecution."

Bondi praised Habba's record and said that under her leadership, the Newark saw a 20% reduction in criminal activity. She also stated that the southern city of Camden had its first summer in 50 years free from homicides.
Legal Career
Habba, 41, first joined Trump's personal legal team in recent years. Subsequently, she defended her client in his hush-money trial in the previous year, which resulted in his conviction on multiple felony counts of financial record manipulation.
Earlier, assuming the top New Jersey post, Donald Trump had revealed he was selecting her as his senior adviser during his second administration, describing the lawyer as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a "tireless advocate for justice".
