An extensive industrial zone located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive contamination after a government taskforce detected traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities within the area, that encompasses businesses shipping frozen marine products.

Emergency Measures and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has triggered emergency cleanup operations and the moving of local inhabitants, following a similar contamination scare in the US that was linked to the Indonesian plants.

A major multinational store chain is one of the businesses that have recalled items from its shelves following the discovery.

Probe and Discovery of Contamination

Indonesian officials launched an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of frozen coated prawns exported by a local firm.

Officials released an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and not sell it, although the found level was far below the authority's intervention limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not pose an acute risk to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of concern following extended, repeated low dose exposure (for example through consumption of contaminated food or liquid over a period) is an elevated chance of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Examinations

Radiation tests showed at least twenty-two factories in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one additional manufacturing sites, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear authority.

A senior official declared that residents living in highly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also performed checks on local workers and residents living near the industrial estate, identifying nine people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The contaminated locations will right away undergo cleanup procedures by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have further selected the site of a recycled metal factory as an containment center for polluted goods.

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that usually appears in the environment as a consequence of nuclear testing or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in soil, food and air.

The amount found in the frozen prawns was much less than FDA intervention limits, but the authority explained prolonged exposure to including low doses of caesium was linked to an elevated chance of cancer.

The withdrawn seafood was available at major retail locations across at least a 12 US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
