England's Emma Coates Exits the Young Lionesses Post to Take Helm at NWSL's Bay FC
Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, the 34-year-old coach has resigned her post with the Young Lionesses national team to take over as head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League expansion side Bay FC.
A New Chapter
Coates succeeds Albertin Montoya, who guided the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to step down at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC occupy a lowly 13th place in the 14-team standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â stated Coates. âIt has helped shape me both professionally and personally. I am now prepared and eager to test my abilities in a different setting.â
Track Record of Success
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates managed the England U23s through matches including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the continental competition and a 4-2 friendly defeat to the United States. Making the move alongside her to the NWSL is her right-hand woman, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the Womenâs Super League.
Kay Cossington, a former FA womenâs technical director, highlighted Coates's abilities: âCoates is an superb manager, but she also has a proven track record of elevating athletes to succeed on the biggest stages.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of teams and environments and has the tactical philosophy we were searching for,â added Cossington.
Bay FC's Journey
The club experienced a contrasting start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its first year before slipping to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The new FA womenâs technical director, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their time with us and extend our best wishes with their new challenge. Emma, with Gemma, has played a pivotal part in strengthening the pathway between the WU23s and the senior squad.â
âTogether, they have directly impacted the development of many young players who have earned call-ups to senior Lionesses,â Step concluded.
Player Progression
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the advancement of multiple players to the national team, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff is now underway, as the FA looks to continue the progress of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the future.
