Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
