A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was accosted by three individuals, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive behind the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Police revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report said.

CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a security uniform opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Authorities have requested members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to find their location," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, a close relative, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," she stated.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to speak about. This is a devastating blow."

She requested the citizens to refrain from sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's children.

In a release, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, warmth and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
