UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
