Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
According to international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
